Introduction

I have been a walker for as long as I can remember and the categories of my walks fall into a series of phases. Starting with my childhood, a considerable walk was required to get to my junior school which I undertook by myself until my brother came to school with me.

As a teenager I would often take a long walk with my brother, taking the family dog with us. We were lucky in that we lived very close to heathland so we could roam. On our holidays we would go exploring which would often take us on a long ramble in country, moorland or at the seaside.

Once married, my wife and I would go to the Dorset coast for a walk on many weekends. When we had children, we would walk them around the lanes and tracks where we lived. When they were older, they would come on long walks whilst my wife sat and enjoyed the sunshine views in the country or at the seaside. Our walks then were typically on coastal paths or along the route of former railway lines.

When the children were older and my wife and I took our holidays by ourselves, I started walking the coastal paths seriously in stages. To facilitate this, we would always stay somewhere new that I had not previously walked. By the time I stopped this project, I had walked the majority of the coastal path from north Devon round to East Sussex.

In my later years I would walk with my brother-in-law when we visited each other. In retirement, I was lucky to get a part-time job with a mapping company surveying footpaths on the Isle of Wight to provide information for tourist guide leaflets.

Below I have listed a selection of the walks that I have undertaken.
