MODEL RAILWAYS
INTRODUCTION
I have been interested in model railways since I was about eight years old. My brother and I first had a Hornby O gauge mains operated set. I was then given a Hornby Dublo boxed set which is still in the family. It was the A4 class Sir Nigel Gresley in LNER blue livery and with two tinplate Gresley teak coaches. When the two rail system started to come out, I decided to change to that and have never lost interest.
The first layout I constructed was a portable model of Verwood station. This was exhibited and also used at the local school as a demonstration of local history.
In 1976 we moved house and I constructed myself a shed 32' x 12' to hold a working model of Wimborne station. The trackwork for the station
and the marshalling yard went down relatively quickly but I only ever managed to make a small amount of the scenery. We moved house again and I had to dismantle the layout. At our new house I used the garage to construct a temporary layout called New Forest junction which was based on activity through Southampton Central. This was partly done to give me ideas for a portable layout of Southampton which I had in mind. A further house move required me to start again so I have constructed a modular layout of Southampton on which I run a representation the rich variety of workings that have been seen there.
