TRAIN  WORKING  NOTES

- Liverpool to Poole -

Class 33
Class 73

On various occasions during 1986, I observed a parcels van being attached to or detatched from the Liverpool train at Southampton. So far, I have not been able to find any documentary evidence of this working. My notes tell me that the van was taken off a down train then taken to the Post Office depot in Western Docks. A van was also attached to an up train at some stage but I never witnessed that.

On the down train working, the loco would wait in the remains of the former electricity generating station siding near the tunnel. The van would be detached from the train and remain in the station until the train had departed. The loco would then attach to the van from behind and propel it into the down sidings before running round and taking the van forward into the docks.

The shuttle was usually operated by a class 73 loco although I have also seen a class 33 perform this duty.
