BRITISH RAIL

- Channel Islands boat train -

Class 33
Class 73
Class 91

This is the boat train that ran as route 90 between Waterloo and Weymouth Quay. The train was hauled by a class 73 or 74 loco between Waterloo and Bournemouth where the loco was exchanged for a class 33 loco and vice versa. The latter worked the tramway from 1973 until closure in 1999. The details that follow were taken from 1980.

There was a regular twice daily service throughout the year, although there were seasonal variations and slight changes to timings on Sundays. Down trains departed from Waterloo at 09:54 and 20:05, arriving at Weymouth Quay at 13:00 and 23:20 respectively. Up trains departed Weymouth Quay at 06:00 and 15:30, arriving at Waterloo at 09:17 and 18:50 respectively. The train called at Basingstoke, Southampton and Bournemouth and the service was available to ordinary passengers although not advertised between Waterloo and Bournemouth.

According to the 1980 Carriage Working Notice, the train formation was an 8RMB set. However, observation around that period indicates that it varied considerably both in formation and number of carriages. Other Carriage Working Notices around that period confirm this (see below).

Two sets of stock were needed to operate the service and were exchanged each weekday morning at Clapham Yard. The morning train from Weymouth went to Clapham Yard after arrival at Waterloo and the morning train from Waterloo was sourced from Clapham Yard. The set in use was berthed overnight at Weymouth Quay. The Friday set worked throught the weekend.
