REGIONAL RAILWAYS

- Cardiff to Portsmouth -

Class 31

Class 33

Class 155

Class 156

Class 158

This service ran between
Cardiff and Portsmouth approximately every hour, with one journey each day being extended to Brighton on the up service. Trains comprised mark 1 WR stock varied in composition, but generally comprised four or five coaches, and hauled by a class 33 locomotive. Class 155 Sprinters were introduced in 1988, being temporarily replaced by class 156 units later that year, and subsequently superceded by class 158 units. The brochure for 1987 shows a Saver fare between Cardiff and Portsmouth as being £17:50.

The introduction of the Sprinter units was controversial as they provided less accommodation than the trains they replaced. The trains became more crowded each year and this problem was never resolved during the life of Regional Railways.
