This working was started to serve the newly re-opened Chandlers Ford station together with other local stations around Southampton. It terminated at Totton and there were hopes that it might be continued along the Fawley branch but this never came to fruition. The cost of operation was supported by a grant and, although being extended beyond the original period, finally ceased and was replaced by an alternative working.
