MODEL RAILWAYS
Southampton
- Operation -
Although the layout is modular and technically portable, it is normally be located in my garage therefore the modules have been designed to suit the dimensions of the garage. The layout comprises a through station, a goods area and a set of storage sidings. It is possible that alternative tableau modules could be constructed and swapped in and out but such plans are now unlikely.
Trains are run to sequences based on fact. The station is modelled on Southampton in principle and in as much that space allows. The buildings are made mainly from available proprietry kits with some modifications. The goods area has been included to give a representation of activity that took place in the docks area.
The intention has been to be able to operate the layout to represent selected periods in time. I have selected periods which offer the greatest diversity of trains and livery but some allowance will have to be made for the scenery which can not easily be altered to suit each specific period of time. Taking information from timetables, working timetables, photographs and observations, I have made a running schedule for a typical one hour period. Train formations are similarly based on fact but the lengths are scaled down to suit the layout. The Up lines and Down lines are controlled separately and a set of Movement Instructions have been compiled to guide the persons operating the controllers.
Here are some early videos of trains running whilst the layout was still in the process of being built. The quality is poor as it was quite difficult trying to take the video with a small digital camera whilst operating the trains at the same time.
