MODEL RAILWAYS
Southampton
- Layout -
The layout is a representation of Southampton Central station and adjacent areas. The layout comprises four main components:
1. Southampton Central station
2. St.Marys and Northam to the east
3. Millbrook and Redbridge to the west
4. storage sidings
The layout features Southampton Central station as the focal point with representations of St.Marys and Northan to the east and Millbrook and Redbridge to the west. A set of sidings enable trains to be assembled and prepared to run to schedule.

The station has been constructed as best can be fitted into a space 3.6 meters long x 0.5 metres wide so that it could be relocated if required with minimal disruption. The station buildings have elements of it's appearance both before rebuilding and after so that trains could be run for different eras without the surroundings seeming to be inapropriate. To this end, the buildings on the Up line are principaly the older style whereas buildings on the Down line are more modern.
Trains are run to represent a selected period in time and initially that is a summer weekday in 1988. Train formations based on actual trains observed and/or photographed have been assembled as accurately as permitted by available models or my ability to make of modify them. The length of the trains have had to be scaled down to suit the length of the station platforms. The trains are run to a timetable also based on fact taken from official working timetables and augmented with observations from that period.

The line appears under St.Marys Road bridge then runs through the cutting to Northam Junction. Behind the signal box are buildings representing the former Meridian TV Studios and an example of a school building. An aggregate Depot acknowledges the presence of such facilities alongside the river. The backscene is completed by a terrace such as seen in St.Marys and Northam.

The line west of the station runs through Millbrook and alongside the Docks. Some representational buildings are included here as are examples of activities that took place in the docks.
