MODEL RAILWAYS
Southampton
- Modular baseboard arrangement -
Panels B, C & D form the Station. Panels A & E are universal corner pieces.
Panel F has been reduced to half width to make it easier to gain access underneath to the control area and is currently just a running line. It has been designed to lift like a counter flap when the track is not in use. Panel K is the Goods Yard but at a future stage could have an interchangeable panel featuring an alternative scene. Panel F could have an alternative full width panel featuring a Motive Power Depot.
Panels G, H, I & J form the Fiddle Yard. Panels G & J will contain all the pointwork. Panels H & I will contain the storage sidings. Originally, plans to have some removable cradles incorporated had been considered to increase the capacity of the yard and also enable return workings of trains without crossing between up and down lines. However, that plan proved hard to realise and an alternative method of working was devised.
The running lines of the trackwork are kept to a standard position so that panel F could be attached directly to panel D, dispensing with panel E. Likewise panel K to panel B dispensing with panel A. This would be for exhibition purposes. The storage sidings would have to have customised connecting panels for the purpose but would also need to be lengthened.
